In January of this year, Samsung Heavy Industries announced the implementation of a green strategy to develop environmentally friendly ship types as its main products. It aims to develop heat recovery, low temperature combustion technology, carbon dioxide capture technology, reduce fuel consumption, and build hydrogen fuel cells and electric motor driven vessels.
According to South Korean media reports, Samsung Heavy Industries has completed the conceptual design of a natural gas-driven ship that can cut 20-25% of carbon dioxide emissions, 90% of nitrogen oxides and 99% of sulfur oxides. The new ship price is expected to be 20% higher than the current ship, but the decline in ship fuel costs will be enough to offset the price increase.
Daewoo Shipbuilding has also recently started cooperation with MAN to develop high-pressure natural gas ship propulsion systems. The system can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 23%, nitrogen oxide by 13% and sulfur oxide emissions by 92%.
Daewoo Shipbuilding is also developing and expanding the application and supply of engine waste heat recovery systems, and assisting ship power through solar cells and wind power.
