Japan develops cold-resistant electric vehicles to reduce the number of car batteries by 10%

According to the Japanese Kyodo News on April 27, research teams such as Hirosaki University of Japan have developed cold-resistant electric vehicles and held test drive activities in Sendai City on the 27th. The car can be used as usual in the northern regions where the winter temperature drops below zero, so users don't have to worry about the power decay.
On April 27th, a cold-resistant electric car developed by Hirosaki University of Japan was tested at Sendai.

The fact that electricity is easily reduced in a low temperature environment has always been a major drawback of electric vehicles. The cold-resistant car overcomes this problem by installing a backup gas engine. The mileage of electric vehicles in a zero-degree environment is only about half of that at 25 degrees. The research team reduced the number of car batteries by one-tenth by installing a small gas engine to heat and charge the battery. In addition, the four-wheel drive vehicle is equipped with an electric motor on the inside of the wheel to ensure safe driving during snow. The research team hopes that this electric car will be put into practical use after five years.

"The hope is to promote cold-resistant electric vehicles to the world and introduce the automobile industry to the northeast and Hokkaido areas to promote post-earthquake reconstruction in the Great East Japan Earthquake," said Shimada Satoshi, a member of the research team and professor of electrical engineering at Hirosaki University.
