According to foreign media reports on October 26, China is working hard to nearly triple the global graphite processing capacity by 2020 to meet the growing demand for lithium-ion battery industry.
Chinese companies Shanshan Technology, BTR New Energy Materials and LuiMao Graphite (in conjunction with BAIC Motor Group Co., Ltd.) are building a graphite-scale super-large plant for lithium-ion batteries with a total processing capacity of 260,000 tons per year.
Data shows that increased processing capacity allows the battery industry to produce 300 giga-hour lithium-ion batteries per year, which is enough to support the 6 million Tesla model 3 sedan.
However, as the demand for lithium batteries continues to rise, processing capacity may not keep up, which will lead to supply chain bottlenecks. Senior analyst Andrew Miller said that graphite is actually the most raw material in raw materials, much more than cobalt. It is a naturally occurring form of carbon that is not uncommon in nature, and the key is to be able to find the right type of graphite.
The battery industry uses two types of flake graphite, one synthetic and the other natural, both of which must be as pure as possible or complementary. Miller said it wants to allow battery manufacturers to seek the best combination of performance and value for money.
However, even with increasing processing capacity, Miller said that the sharp rise in demand for graphite still means that the supply chain will be constrained. After all, this scale of demand has never been seen before. This situation has led some observers to believe that lithium-ion battery production faces a significant risk of graphite scarcity. China, with its extensive natural reserves of graphite, is clearly eager to address supply chain panic, but one of its problems is how to deal with graphite that is useless to the battery industry.
Miller said that one of the great challenges in the graphite industry is to distribute production because it is impossible to sell graphite only to the battery industry.
In summary, insufficient supply of any material market may increase the risk of lithium-ion battery production.
