Developed new sensor systems abroad to capture sewer pollutants

[ Instrument Network Instrument Development ] has new means to combat corporate pollution. According to foreign media reports, it may be very difficult to determine whether a company illegally releases toxic substances into sewers. However, the new sensor system is designed to identify these substances by sampling and analyzing the water in the sewer line. The technology was developed by scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration in Germany and scientists from the EU microMole project.
At the heart of the device are three rings, each equipped with sensors, batteries, energy management systems, control and communication systems, and micropump sampling systems.
The robot places the first ring in the sewer pipe, just upstream of the suspicious corporate sewer outlet. The second ring is located directly downstream of the discharge port and the third ring is located slightly downstream.
Using physical sensors that analyze water parameters (such as temperature, pH, and conductivity), the first two loops communicate wirelessly with one another, essentially comparing the parameters. If it is determined that the parameter changes significantly after the water flows through the outlet, the second loop sends a signal to "wake up" the third loop.
The ring in turn uses chemical sensors to further analyze the water and check for the presence of specific contaminants. If any of these substances are detected, the authorities will be reminded that the contaminated water samples they have saved can be used as evidence for a court hearing. On the other hand, if no contaminants are detected, the ring will automatically dispense the cleaning solution and flush the chemical sensors to prepare them for the next time.
The technology has been successfully tested in laboratories and in certain lengths of sewers. The researchers now plan to test in actual municipal sewers in five European cities.
