Don’t Be Bothered by Transferring Between Different Operation Systems

Scott Lim, Senior Engineer at R&D Division of CoreTech System (Moldex3D)

According to the list from TOP 500 (www.top500.org), Linux dominates all the faster 500 supercomputers in the world. Why do supercomputers use Linux as the operating system? The overall advantage of Linux is that it’s completely free and open-source, which means the cost of this operating system is less than Windows. Linux has many benefits such as higher performance, higher security, higher stability/reliability, easier maintenance, more community support resources, etc. compared to other operating systems.

Beginners may think Linux is harder to use than other operating systems. Using the command line in Linux is the main obstacle for new users. For example, writing a job script and executing a submitted job command are required when you submit a job to a third-party job scheduler. The format of command lines depends on what scheduler you use, and it may take a lot of time to learn the various commands to schedulers. In addition, extra software and settings are required to enable the project to be transferred between Windows and Linux.

To overcome these challenges, Moldex3D Computing Manager is an easy-to-use interface to smooth the workflow to submit a job and shorten the learning curve for various commands to schedulers. Fig. 1 shows the architecture of Moldex3D Computing Manager, it supports job submission to a third-party scheduler in Linux system (the blue arrow) or Moldex3D Job Scheduler in Windows system (the green arrow). The Computing Manager can also be a simple scheduler (Single Node Scheduler) to launch the solver in Linux (yellow arrow).

Users can submit, download and monitor jobs to the scheduler in the Linux system through a single Computing Manager UI in Windows (Fig. 2 & 3). Through the scroll-down menu in Add Server Information, the user can easily select the server type and scheduler (see Fig. 4) to create a job script for the submitted jobs. For advanced users who are familiar with command lines and job scripts, it can also allow users to customize the scripts to fulfill specific requirements.

Moldex3D Computing Manager builds a seamless interface to bridge the communication between the Linux computing resources and Windows system, enabling users to keep the current workflow to easily submit jobs to the Linux system and save lots of time.
