·Japanese media: The safety myth of Japanese cars collapses in the world

"Ah, this doesn't matter?" In mid-November, I saw a public video on the Internet, and the Indian car industry was shocked. In the video, a car slammed into the wall, the front of the car became unrecognizable, and the window glass shattered and splashed out.
The video was published by the International Automotive Safety Assessment Agency (GNCAP), which operates in emerging market countries such as India. The "Stunning Hit" is the small car "Datsan GO" that Nissan listed in India in March this year. GNCAP pointed out that the problem with Datsan GO is that it is not equipped with airbags, and the body itself is also very fragile. In the safety evaluation with a maximum rating of five stars, the car did not even get a star.
GNCAP asks Ghosn for "stop selling"
GNCAP sent a letter to Nissan President Carlos Ghosn saying: "Should stop selling and modify the design." The incident was widely reported by the Indian media. For the expansion of bad impressions, the local Nissan dealers can't conceal the feeling of uneasiness: "In India and the importer of this car in South Africa, if consumers feel 'unsafe', will they buy it?! The impact is immeasurable. ”
It is now difficult to determine how much the “small evaluation” will affect the sales of Datsan GO. Despite the weakness of the Indian auto market itself, the car’s sales actually did not reach the original plan.
Datsan GO is Nissan "developed for the development of emerging market countries such as India." Nissan will deliberately separate Dent Sang from the "NISSAN" brand, and will not promote the automobile manufacturing business by sticking to the equipment and quality standards that Japanese cars are easily considered to be "over-quality". And this car, a symbol of globalization, hides traps.
The price of Datsan GO starts from 310,000 rupees (about 30,000 yuan) and is a low-priced product among Japanese automakers in India. In order to cut costs, the car cut the safety measures to the minimum limit. Of course, it does not violate Indian traffic regulations. The Nissan public relations department explained: "We have studied the local traffic conditions and have confidence in the safety performance of the car."
However, in terms of vehicle safety and environmental protection, emerging market countries have also begun to demand the same high performance as developed countries in recent years. Consumers in India and other places will also receive the latest global information from the Internet as a reference for car purchases, so they can only meet their requirements in accordance with local regulations. The background to Datsan's criticism in India is that emerging market countries that “consider prices first compared to safety” have produced unexpected changes.
Like Nissan, Toyota is struggling in the Indian market. Toyota’s Managing Director Yoshida Shouxiao pointed out: “Emerging market countries are accelerating their catch-up speeds in terms of safety standards.” In order to save sales, Toyota is driving in October’s low-priced model “Etios”, which is scheduled to be launched in India. Airbags are standard on both the seats and the passenger seat.
Volkswagen (VW) has decided in January this year to standardize airbags for low-priced "POLO" models listed in India. It can be seen that in India, which is highly anticipated as a growth market, Xiahou, a large global car company, has strengthened its security measures.
In terms of security measures, it is not just India that is one step behind Japanese cars. “Japanese cars are not safe, so they won’t buy.” This view is common among young people in China. They believe that the use of thin steel sheets for Japanese cars in pursuit of weight reduction is very unsafe. In fact, this was done to absorb shocks through the outer panel being broken, but Japanese manufacturers failed to convey the true purpose of this practice to consumers, which became a reason for the stagnant sales growth.
The new car presentation was also full of doubts about reliability. In the crash test introduced by the US security evaluation group in 2012, Toyota got bad results. In the "small area overlap collision" test which is close to the actual accident situation and causes the driver's seat side to hit the wall by 25%, the under-prepared "Prius" and the like are given the lowest evaluation. Ge Weiqing, head of Toyota's product planning division, said: "In order to update the evaluation results at the end of this year, we have tried our best to take countermeasures."
However, in this case, a continuous recall (recycling and free repair) of Takada and Honda occurred. How these problems are handled, or will have a decisive impact on the security myth that Japanese cars have already begun to shake.
On December 1st, Honda held a new car presentation for the small car "Grace". “Is the same hybrid system as the Fit, don’t worry about the recall?” “Is the airbag manufactured by Takada?” “Is the trust of Honda’s car shaken?” The reporter’s question is not the new car sales strategy. And all are the safety and reliability issues of Honda cars.
The emergence of these questions, in addition to the five recalls from Fit, also stemmed from Honda’s scandal in the United States that reported a major accident.
In addition, the quality problems of Takada airbags used by Honda have not subsided. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has imposed practical enforcement measures on Takada to conduct airbag recalls throughout the United States. On December 3, the Subcommittee of the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing around Takada Airbags following the US Senate.
Cars are products that are closely related to people's lives. Because of this, once the safety reputation is damaged, they will quickly lose their competitiveness. At present, for Japanese cars, safety is the biggest Achilles heel. Where did the Japanese car, which has been expanding its share of the world with safety as its selling point, lost its way? It is now necessary to find out as soon as possible and take countermeasures.
