Progress in real-time monitoring and early warning of landslide debris flows in Chengdu, Sichuan Province

[China Instrument Network Instrument R&D] Accurate pre-alert of rainfall-type landslide debris flow is a worldwide problem and one of the research hotspots of international landslide debris flows. Recently, Qiao Jianping's team of researchers from the Chengdu Institute of Mountain Studies in Sichuan focused on real-time monitoring, early warning and demonstration of landslide-induced debris flow, and carried out international cooperation and joint research, achieving remarkable results and social benefits.

Monitoring and early warning field demonstration sites
The research team systematically summarized and proposed the monitoring and early warning principle and classification of landslide debris flows, monitoring and early warning structures, space warning and time warning types and methods, monitoring and early warning techniques, and formed a relatively complete theory and method system for monitoring and early warning of rainfall-induced landslide debris flows. Developed a multi-point, three-stage series, globally-coverable, surface inclinometer network system with independent intellectual property rights with high accuracy, low cost, easy installation, and reliable signals; landslides and debris flows were established through field tests and indoor simulation tests. Early warning model of source damage initiation and critical precipitation criteria and methods for calculating debris flow warning early warning rainfall thresholds in missing data areas.
Based on the above research results, the team published 42 papers, of which 11 were SCI search, 1 monograph was published, 6 applications for invention patents, and 6 software copyrights. At the same time, 12 on-site real-time monitoring and early-warning demonstration sites for landslides and debris flows were established in the earthquake-disturbed area in the Longmenshan District of Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. At present, the construction monitoring and early warning system platform and demonstration sites have been adopted by the Chengdu Geological Environmental Monitoring Station and the Dujiangyan Land and Resources Bureau. The developed surface inclinometer has been used and promoted in Guodian and railway transportation systems.
During the research process, the team actively carried out international cooperation and exchanges. The University of Tokyo, Japan, Japan Civil Engineering Research Institute, Japan Central Development Corporation, National Taiwan Jiaotong University, Academia Sinica, National Central University, National Cheng Kung University, National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology In Sri Lanka, Inst.of Information Technology, Indonesia Institute of Technology Bandung, Kasetsart University, Thailand, etc., carried out collaborative research and exchanges on landslide debris flow monitoring and early warning methods and technologies, which promoted the international status and influence of related research in China.
