Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research have succeeded in doubling the electrical conductivity of MOFs, while making them fluorescent, by filling a fluorescent metal-organic framework MOF porous material with conductive polymers. This result makes the conductivity of MOF a breakthrough to improve, contribute to the application of MOF-based optoelectronic devices.
Metal-organic framework MOF is a porous material that has been widely noticed for nearly two decades. The material is a supramolecular network formed by self-assembly of metal-ligand coordination between organic ligands and metal ions. Due to its porous and spongy structure, the material has catalytic and gas-adsorptive properties.
Indian scientists have found that the adjustability and stability of MOF allows for simple control of their conductivity by humans, a practice that is difficult to achieve in existing metallic materials. The conductive plasticity of MOF will lead to the generation of a new generation of electronic products . The team filled the pores of a cadmium-based MOF with a conductive polymer, polypyrrole, to successfully increase its conductivity by a billion times. This kind of both conductive and fluorescent MOF material can be made for multi-functional materials for photovoltaic devices, solar cells and imaging devices can be used.
