Recently, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and Siemens Energy have signed a contract to jointly develop a 2.3 MW wind turbine motor at the National Wind Energy Technology Center of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The research and development of large-scale, highly reliable, high-efficiency wind turbine motors is a core project for many years in the development of wind power projects in the United States. It is also one of the largest projects in which the U.S. government and the industry jointly develop wind power.
Under the joint research and development agreement, Siemens and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory will test the basic characteristics of this large-scale wind turbine motor and verify its new performance for at least three years (or even longer). The test work will be carried out under the actual operating conditions of the wind turbine motor, including extreme weather conditions.
