It is reported that on August 21, local time, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Eastern Research Center announced that its team has developed a new type of packaging material. This material is made from the milk protein "casein", which can be eaten directly and decomposed naturally. The emergence of such packaging materials will largely determine the environmental pollution of food packaging bags.

The team added pectin from lemon and lime peels to form a transparent film based on casein. Pectin is the substance that makes fruit sticky. The finished product looks like a plastic wrap, but it is not easy to stretch. It is 500 times stronger than the ordinary packaging material, low density polyethylene (LDPE). Oxygen rots food and makes rancid food more rancid. Degradable packaging materials made of starch have been commonly used, but due to the severe oxygen permeability of the materials, they are not suitable for food packaging.

The research team established a company specializing in the packaging material in Texas, USA, and it is expected that the official product will be available within three years. The research results were published at the 252nd Annual Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS), which was held in Pennsylvania from August 21st to 25th and is the largest society in the scientific community.

Lee De-hwan, a professor of chemistry at Seokang University in South Korea, said: “Perfluorochemicals (PFCs), once food packaging materials, were once considered safe packaging materials and are now banned from use, so they are made from casein and pectin. Food packaging materials should come in handy.”

At the same time, he also expressed his concern: "It is worth considering that more than 2 billion people in the world are suffering from hunger. Whether it is ethical or moral to produce packaging paper from cow's milk and extracting casein."
