In recent years, with the promotion and application of ethanol gasoline in China, the demand for fuel ethanol in the domestic market has increased significantly. However, in order to avoid excessive consumption of food, the state has restricted the introduction of measures to produce fuel ethanol from grain or sugar as raw materials. Non-food materials production of fuel ethanol has become the focus of domestic enterprises. Relevant information shows that China's agricultural and forestry waste alone is about 1.5 billion tons per year, and it has the potential to produce 400 million tons of ethanol.
Wang Junzhang, president of the Jilin Petrochemical Research Institute, said that in order to achieve a major breakthrough in the non-food production of fuel ethanol, the newly-established R&D center is conducting research on domestic and foreign non-food ethanol production technologies and has chosen the main direction.
At present, Jilin Petrochemical Ethanol Fuel Co., Ltd. uses Chenhua Grain as its raw material and has a production capacity of 600,000 tons of fuel ethanol annually. On this basis, Jilin Petrochemical will speed up the construction of non-food ethanol bases and expand the non-grain ethanol industry based on the unification of advanced nature, feasibility, and economy.
CNPC attached great importance to the development of non-food ethanol technologies and requested Jilin Petrochemical to rely on existing production facilities during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan†period to form scale on non-food ethanol production.
Dr. Liu Haijun, head of the R&D center of the Fuel Alcohol Research Institute, said that the Jilin Petrochemical Research Institute has been engaged in environmental protection and bio-engineering research since 1974 and has accumulated a certain amount of technology. The establishment of the fuel ethanol research and development center will integrate the characteristics of non-food ethanol technology at home and abroad, and form its own technological advantages in the introduction, digestion and absorption.
